I've been in the Middle East since 2017, but I still remember the feeling of stepping into Dubai after years sun-soaked beach life in Sri Lanka. Everything was so different, so new, so unusual — I couldn't help but start jotting down notes of all the things that surprised me.

That habit stuck with me, and when I first arrived in Qatar, I did the same. I spent four months in the country preparing for the FIFA World Cup, and while at first, it felt so similar to the UAE that I sometimes forgot I was in a different country, the details kept reminding me — small things that amazed me then and still do today.

After FIFA, life took me living across multiple countries, and Qatar remained one of them. And with every visit, I keep adding to my growing collection of notes — little observations, curious traditions, everyday moments that make this place special.

But let’s start with the basics, because if you’ve never experienced the Middle Eastern flavor before, you’re in for a treat.

Qatar is nestled on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, the country seamlessly blends its rich cultural heritage with cutting-edge modernity, offering travelers a unique and captivating experience distinct from its Middle Eastern neighbors.

A Tapestry of Cultural Experiences

Begin your journey at Souq Waqif, Doha's historic market, where winding alleys brim with spices, textiles, and traditional crafts. Unlike the sprawling malls of Dubai, Souq Waqif offers an authentic glimpse into Qatari life, with vendors eager to share stories behind their wares.

Architectural Marvels: Museums That Tell a Story

Qatar's commitment to art and culture is evident in its world-class museums. The Museum of Islamic Art, designed by I.M. Pei, stands as a beacon of Islamic architecture, housing artifacts spanning 1,400 years. Nearby, the National Museum of Qatar, inspired by the desert rose, offers immersive exhibits detailing the nation's history and aspirations. These institutions provide a depth of cultural immersion that sets Qatar apart from other destinations.

Adventures Beyond the Ordinary

Desert Escapades

Venture into the Qatari desert for a thrilling dune-bashing experience, culminating at the Inland Sea (Khor Al Adaid), one of the few places where the sea encroaches into the desert. This unique landscape offers a serene contrast to the urban hustle, providing a tranquil retreat under the stars.

Pearl Diving: A Nod to the Past

Embrace Qatar's pearling history by embarking on a pearl diving excursion. Unlike the commercialized experiences elsewhere, Qatar offers authentic dives where you can personally retrieve oysters, echoing the nation's storied past.

Culinary Delights: A Fusion of Flavors

Qatari cuisine is a delightful blend of Middle Eastern flavors with a unique twist. Savor dishes like Machbous, a spiced rice dish with meat, or indulge in Luqaimat, sweet dumplings drizzled with date syrup. The emphasis on traditional flavors, combined with modern culinary techniques, offers a dining experience distinct from neighboring cuisines.

A Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation

Qatar's vision for the future is encapsulated in projects like Msheireb Downtown Doha, the world's first sustainable downtown regeneration project. This initiative showcases Qatar's dedication to blending modern living with environmental responsibility, setting it apart from other rapidly developing regions.

Hospitality Rooted in Tradition

Experience the warmth of Qatari hospitality, known as 'Arabian hospitality,' where guests are treated with utmost respect and generosity. This cultural cornerstone ensures that visitors feel welcomed and valued, creating lasting memories of genuine human connection.

Fascinating Facts About Life in Qatar

  • Ramadan Work Hours Confusion – During Ramadan, work hours are reduced (usually 6 hours per day), but the actual timing varies across sectors, often leading to confusion. Some offices enforce strict schedules, while others are more flexible. But the most frustrating is shopping malls, museums, beauty salons etc working hours. Places open from 10 am to 1 pm, then remain closed until 7 pm, when reopen again. If Ramadan falls into a summer time, it isnt really much to do during the day time...

  • No Tax, High Salaries – Qatar has zero income tax, making it attractive for expats. However, living costs can be high, especially for housing and international schooling.

  • Extreme Temperature Swings – Summers can hit 50°C+, making air-conditioned spaces essential. But winter brings pleasant 19°C days, and even chilly nights that require warm jackets!

  • Weekend on Friday & Saturday – Unlike Western countries, Qatar’s weekend falls on Friday (holy day) and Saturday. Sunday is a regular workday, which takes some getting used to!

  • Public Transport Is Limited – Unlike Dubai, taxis and ride-hailing apps (Karwa, Uber) are the main transport. The Doha Metro is modern and efficient, but outside the city, you’ll need a car.

  • Pearling Over Oil in the Past – Before discovering natural gas, Qatar’s economy thrived on pearl diving, which was one of the best in the world!

  • Hyper-Luxurious Lifestyle – Supercars, designer brands, and lavish dining are common. But there’s also a peaceful, family-oriented culture with beautiful parks and quiet beaches.

  • Hayya Card Culture – Since FIFA 2022, Qatar has used the Hayya Card system for visa-free entry during events, making travel smoother for visitors.

  • World-Class Healthcare for Free – The Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) provides top-tier public healthcare, and Qatar residents can access it at minimal cost with a health card.

  • Laws Against PDA and Dress Code – Public displays of affection (like kissing) are not allowed, and while Qatar is more relaxed than other Gulf countries, dressing modestly is still expected in public places.

  • Camel Racing With Robot Jockeys – Traditional camel racing is a national sport, but instead of human jockeys, tiny robot jockeys (controlled remotely) now ride the camels!

  • One of the Safest Countries – Qatar consistently ranks among the safest countries in the world, with extremely low crime rates.

  • Weekend Getaways to the Desert – Qataris and expats love heading to the desert for camping, BBQs, and dune bashing, especially during the cooler months.

  • Gas-Rich, Not Oil-Rich – Unlike Saudi Arabia and the UAE, Qatar’s wealth comes from natural gas, not oil. It has the third-largest gas reserves in the world!

  • Strict Alcohol Regulations – Alcohol is only available in licensed hotel bars and a single liquor store (QDC) for non-Muslims with a permit. Drinking in public is illegal.

  • Vapes Are Banned in Qatar – Bringing vapes into Qatar is forbidden, and they can be confiscated at the airport upon arrival. Unlike cigarettes, which are available in stores, vapes are strictly prohibited. However, some people manage to buy them through Instagram sellers—for 10 times the usual price.

  • Fancy Number Plates Cost a Fortune – Qataris love personalized number plates, and some have been auctioned for millions of riyals!

  • Arabic Coffee and Dates Everywhere – Traditional Qatari hospitality means you’re always offered qahwa (Arabic coffee) and dates when visiting someone’s home or even in government offices.

  • Malls Are Social Hubs – Since summers are extremely hot, malls aren’t just for shopping; they are entertainment centers with ice rinks, cinemas, indoor theme parks, and luxury restaurants.

  • Lush Green Parks in the Desert – Despite being an arid country, Qatar has beautifully maintained parks like Aspire Park and Oxygen Park, offering green spaces in the middle of the desert.
